Exceptional academic pathways

The cornerstone of a Marsden education is our exceptional academic offering. In the Senior School, our programmes are rigorous and purposeful, designed to develop depth of understanding, analytical thinking and intellectual independence.

Within our smaller personalised learning environment, underpinned by a strong culture of care, each student is known, challenged, and supported to pursue excellence.

Our aim is to build the attitude, flexibility, breadth of learning and independent work habits that enable students to thrive well beyond Marsden. As they progress through Years 11–13, students take increasing ownership of their learning, preparing confidently for tertiary study and life beyond school.

NCEA at Marsden

Students in Years 11–13 complete New Zealand’s national qualification:

NCEA is a globally recognised and robust qualification that can take you anywhere in the world. For a detailed overview of how NCEA is structured at Marsden, visit our NCEA page.

At Marsden, high expectations are matched with strong support, enabling students to achieve at consistently high levels. Our NCEA results consistently place us among the highest-performing schools in the country.

New Zealand Scholarship

New Zealand Scholarship represents the highest level of secondary academic achievement. It recognises students who demonstrate exceptional critical thinking, depth of understanding and the ability to apply knowledge independently.

Scholarship is an integral part of Marsden’s academic culture. Students are encouraged and supported to pursue Scholarship across a wide range of subjects, with structured preparation and extension embedded within senior programmes.

Our consistent Scholarship success reflects the intellectual discipline, curiosity and ambition fostered throughout the Senior School years.

Extension and International Pathways

As part of our commitment to academic stretch, Marsden reintroduced Cambridge International in 2026.

Selected students may undertake an Extended Mathematics pathway, leading to the opportunity to sit Cambridge IGCSE Mathematics in Year 11. This programme runs alongside NCEA requirements and provides additional depth in conceptual understanding and mathematical reasoning.

This carefully targeted introduction complements our strong NCEA framework while enhancing opportunities for students seeking further academic challenge. It marks the beginning of a broader strategic direction, with additional opportunities under consideration as we continue to strengthen our senior academic pathways.

Preparing for life beyond school

At Marsden, we prepare students exceptionally well for life beyond school. You will find young Marsden Old Girls studying at universities in New Zealand, Australia, the UK, USA, Europe and Asia

Our graduates leave academically capable and intellectually confident, equipped with the adaptability and independence required for tertiary study and beyond.

All students, from the most able to those for whom learning presents a greater challenge, benefit from a school culture where setting a personal goal to give of your best is the norm. High expectations are paired with genuine support, ensuring every learner is encouraged to grow, strive and succeed.

A Marsden education has set me up to enjoy learning and always approach everything with an open mind. It has taught me to embrace studying as something to enjoy and a time to further my learning especially in areas that I am passionate about or interested in. Marsden has also provided me with the confidence in my learning and studying abilities going forward into university and the workforce.
